When it comes to Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, or any other trading card game, there’s a point where protecting your growing collection becomes a must. Figuring out the best way to keep your precious rectangles safe isn’t always easy. To help, I’ve put together this list of products specifically designed to protect your cards from damage. These are all items I own, use, and trust to keep my collection safe. While this article primarily focuses on Magic: The Gathering, most of these products can be applied to other popular trading card games.

Disclaimer: I do not play with Pokemon cards, Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, or anything except Magic The Gathering. While the information herein is accurate to the best of my knowledge, I may be wrong about things. If I have made any errors, I assure you are not intentional. Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh! any others are fine games, but none of them have Innistrad, and I’m a shameless scary vampire fanboy.

Vault X Premium Exo-Tec 3 Ring TCG Binder

Since starting my Magic: The Gathering cards obsession hobby, I’ve tried several types of binders. From old, worn-out school binders to decorative zipper folders, I’ve learned what works for me and what doesn’t.

On one of these quests, I discovered this binder by Vault X, and what a fantastic discovery it was. Expandable with d-rings? Check. Water-proof and scratch-resistant? Check. Sturdy enough to survive getting crushed under an adjustable electric bed frame (yes, this happened to my previous binder)? It sure feels that way. Moreover, the inside is lined with a felt-like material that will keep your cards from sliding off while you meticulously sort them by color, type, and foil-y-ness. The simple design ensures this binder will look great for Pokemon cards, Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, ect.

They come in multiple colors and slim/large versions to accommodate your card storage needs!

Kitoyz 900 Pocket Side-Loading Trading Card Binder Sleeves

There are tons of binder sleeves on the market, and it can be easy to get lost in all the options: clear, one-sided, 4-pocket, 9-pocket, black-backing, matte finish, and so on. To keep your collectible cards safe in a binder, there is one unanimously accepted feature you should always choose: side-loading. Not only is side-loading easier, but it also prevents the dreaded “Oops, I dropped my binder, and now all my cards are on the dirty ground” scenario.

While you can go for high-end pages from Dragon Shield or Vault X, I find these less-expensive alternatives from Kitoyz to work just as well. They fit Magic the Gathering and Pokemon card dimensions and come in packs of 50 or 100. However, if you’re like me you will want to grab the 100 pack. Or several 100 packs.

Dragon Shield Outer Sleeves

When it comes time to play the cards you’ve been keeping snug inside your binder, you’ll want to have something to protect them from all the pizza grease and spilled beverages during game night. In my opinion, when it comes to card protection, nothing beats Dragon Shield.

Dragon Shield is a world-renowned manufacturer of high-quality card sleeves. These sleeves can’t be beaten in terms of durability, longevity, and protection. They are a designed to fit Magic The Gathering card dimensions, but Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and most other cards will fit as well. Although they are a bit more pricey than most brands, the quality and sheer number of colors to choose from make it more than worthwhile. As a bonus, each set comes in a box themed after a dragon of a different color, with an original name and dragon lore on the back.

Dragon Shield Glueless Sealable Inner Sleeves

I recently built an all-werewolf Magic: The Gathering commander deck to bring some lunar terror to game night. But I ran into a problem: the double-sided human/werewolf cards. Every time the day-night cycle changed, I had to pull the cards out of their sleeves to flip them, which risked damaging them over time. That’s when I discovered inner sleeves. Typically used to protect valuable cards, they seemed perfect for avoiding excessive wear on my wolfies.

Most inner sleeves are open at the top, but I found that frustrating since they often slipped off when removing cards. Sealable inner sleeves seemed like an option, but I didn’t like the idea of sticky glue ruining the card art. Enter Dragon Shield’s glueless sealable inner sleeves! These ingenious sleeves seal your cards on all sides without glue, and they’re a game-changer. I can’t recommend them enough—you really have to try them to see how amazing they are!

Mage Tech Commander Deck Boxes

Now that you’ve finally gotten your commander deck built, sleeved, and sleeved again, you’ll want a box to store it. My personal favorite boxes are made by Mage Tech, namely their Commander Deck Box Lite.

This box can fit all 100 Magic The Gathering commander deck cards with room for tokens. It comes in various colors and is constructed of a quality waterproof material. The magnetic lid doubles as an angled stand for easy card removal. My favorite feature is the commander window. All Mage Tech commander boxes come with a protective plastic cover and a slot in the box to display the boss of your deck. This way, you can easily see which deck you are grabbing when bringing the pain to your MtG buddies.

Mage Tech also makes an Ultimate version, with a magnetic commander cover and drawer for dice and other trinkets. Now you can display your deck in style!
